NCM is very proud of our colleague Julie Young who has recently been admitted to the Board of Trustees ofThe Muirhead Outreach Project. Julie will fulfil the role of the Treasurer for the charity on a voluntary basis. Although this is something Julie is doing in her own time, she is incredibly well suited for the job as she takes responsibility for a number of our social investment clients here at NCM.
The Muirhead Outreach Project is a registered charity based in Glenrothes, set up in 2004 by the Directors of Cairn Mhor Childcare Partnership Ltd. The Partnership recognised that some of their referred children may have been able to remain at home if they had received appropriate support. The charity provides support to families in the Glenrothes and Levenmouth area and is the only local charity to work with the whole family. The team spends 8 weeks getting to know families and working together to learn about:
- Communication
- Emotions
- Routines that work
- De-escalation
- Building confidence and self-esteem (in parent and child)
After this one-to-one work, the charity provides groups as a way for individuals to practice their skills, have a good time and gain new experiences.
The dedicated team at Muirhead are made up of managers, sessional workers and volunteers who believe in forming positive relationships with families who are experiencing difficulties that could potentially lead to family breakdown. All staff receive a foundation of training in child protection, first aid and communication skills. Further training such as mindfulness, attachment, child development and stress management are also offered and encouraged. Staff are chosen because they are friendly, approachable and good communicators. They are able to nurture, educate and make people smile!
Muirhead recently held an event called The Muirhead Mile, an annual event, which saw the Project set up a route for people to walk and participate in a scavenger hunt in order to raise money for the charity. You can find a video about the day here.
